Coach Mike Run
The 26th Annual Coach Mike 5K Health Run and 1 mile Fun Run is scheduled for Saturday, August 22rd, 2009. The 5K run course will consist of a cross-country run through the YMCA property. We will again have the one mile Fun Run for ages 12 and under on the fields of the YMCA property.

This event is a wonderful tribute to Coach Mike Castronis, who set an example for young and old alike as an athlete, coach instructor, administration, friend and civic volunteer. Coach Mike was a three-time All Sec lineman for the Georgia Bulldogs in the 1940s. He coached high school football in Northeast Georgia and returned to UGA in 1961 as an assistant football coach.

He taught physical education and was director of intramural at the University of Georgia until he retired in 1982. He also coached the UGA cheerleaders for many years.

Perhaps Coach Mike is best know throughout the southeast for the time he spent serving as assistant director at the Athens Y Camp in Tallulah Falls, Georgia. He made a tremendous impact and touched many young lives with his determination and winning spirit. From 1949 until his death from cancer in 1987 his was the first face seen by campers as he held them daily in a vigorous early morning exercise program.

All proceeds of the Coach Mike 5K Health Run help to continue the Athens YMCA's mission to build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities by providing funding for our youth activities. Last year the Athens YMCA served over 1500 area children in our afterschool and camping programs.

This year's race is a part of the 2008 Run and See Georgia Grand Prix Series.
