ALL FITNESS CLASSES ARE OPEN AND FREE TO YMCA MEMBERS -PLEASE CHECK THE YMCA'S CURRENT FITNESS SCHEDULE FOR ACCURATE INFORMATION...AVAILABLE IN THE YMCA'S LOBBY. THE SCHEDULE IS UPDATED EVERY MONTH.


Fitness Center Policy:
T-shirt & tennis shoes are required. The Fitness Center is available to members 14 & up. Ages 14 & 15 must be accompanied by a parent who is a member. Attendants are on duty to assist members Monday-Friday from 6:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m., Saturday 9:00 am-5:00 pm, & on Sunday 1:00-6:00 p.m.

Fitness Orientation
All new YMCA members are offered an equipment orientation. The orientation will be given by Fitness Center attendants and lasts 20-30 minutes. Orientation covers the use of the machines, Fitness Center policies, & YMCA programs. More information is available when you sign up for a YMCA membership.

Personal Training
Certified Personal Trainers can assist you in your fitness needs. A trainer can help you develop an individual fitness program, teach you about sports conditioning, stretching and more. Call Elyse Giles at 543-6596 for more information.

Massage Therapy
Massage is available for Health Club members. Members of the Men's Health Club may contact Joe Leone at 404-622-6610 or Joey Freeman at 549-3853 for rates and scheduling information. Joey Freeman provides chair massage in the Fitness Center on Friday mornings, 9-10:30 a.m. No appointment necessary. Members of the Women's Health Club may contact Regina Madison @ 706-246-5544 for an appointment.

Family Fitness Days
The Athens YMCA wants to encourage youth health and family interaction. To support this we have added Family Fitness Days. On Family Fitness Days children ages 11-13 are welcome to use the Fitness Center when accompnaied by an adult. Summer Family Fitness days: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9-11 a.m., 1-3 p.m. and all day Saturday and Sunday.

Class Descriptions:

BEGINNER SPIN: This class is appropriate for those who haven't attended a spin class before, want some more practice before taking a more advanced class or just enjoy a slower paced class. You will learn how to set your bike up for your body as well as the terminology and postures used in all spin classes.

BOOT CAMP: Different styles of exercises using body, weights, and cardio intervals. Classes can be both inside and outside.

CARDIO JAM: This high-energy hi-lo aerobic workout will challenge and energize you as you cross train your way to wellness. This class focuses on fun and groove.

FITNESS BELLYDANCE CLASS: Come and have fun learning new ways to strengthen your core!

HYDROBICS: This shallow water aerobics class is great for building a strong heart and lungs, toning muscles and increasing flexibility. Whether you are advanced or doing exercise for the first time, this class is for you. Tons of fun and a great opportunity to socialize while keeping fit.

INSTRUCTOR'S CHOICE: Come be surprised by your instructor! This class will always include a minimum of 45 minutes of aerobic exercise and may include weight work.

INTERVAL: Combines segments of high-intensity work and segments of moderate-to-light intensity work.

KICKBOXING: A high intensity cardio kickboxing class that uses punching and kicking combinations as well as strength, flexibility, endurance, strength and coordination training for a challenging and balanced total body workout.

PILATES MAT: This hour long mat class focuses on core (abdominal and back) control and strength while providing a gentle and challenging workout. This refreshing mind-body workout improves flexibility, agility and economy of movement.

POWER HOUR: Begin your day with an hour of strength conditioning and core work. SILVER SNEAKERS®: This group exercise class is for seniors of all fitness levels and can be performed seated or standing. The class focuses on cardiovascular health, muscular strength, balance, coordination and conditioning.

SILVER SNEAKERS® CARDIO CIRCUIT: Combine fun with fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout. Upper body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a SilverSneakers ball is alternated with non-impact aerobic choreography. A chair is offered for support, stretching and relaxation exercises.

SPIN: Come enjoy a unique indoor cycling experience. This athletic fitness class conducted on a stationary cycle uses music and visualization as inspiration for a great workout. This non-impact class is designed for all fitness levels.

STEP & SCULPT: This aerobic class involves a minimum 45 minute aerobic step workout, ending with a strength training session.

STRETCH & TONE: A total workout for all ages. This has been the Y's best-kept secret. Join Bern and her husband as she leads you through a workout that will, "exercise every part of your body, even the eyes and fingers ... "

TOTAL BODY FIT: Use weights, the body's own resistance, bands and physioballs to strength train the entire body. Class will close with a stretching session.

TRIPLE FIT: Get the best of everything—a combo class consisting of two cardiovascular segments (step, hi-lo, slide, kickboxing) and one segment of strength training.

YOGA 1: The emphasis in this class will be on refining awareness of alignments, building more endurance and flexibility in the body and enjoying a wider variety of posture.

YOGA 2: An active practice ideal for those who are physically fit and wish to deepen their yoga practice. Variations on the "Sun Salutation" will be taught as well as seated poses, stronger standing poses, backbends, and the fundamentals of handstand and headstand.

YOGA 3: A physically challenging introduction to more advanced poses or sequences. We will learn the basics of arm balances, deeper backbends, more advanced inversions, and the art of ‘vinyasa' or flowing sequences of poses.

YOGA SPROUTS: Uses fun and playful yoga poses and breathing exercises to give children a feeling of well-being while helping to develop physical strength and flexibility, refine motor skills, improve concentration, cultivate confidence and self-esteem, and more.

YOGA STRETCH: Yoga Stretch will move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing postures. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of postures designed to increase flexibility, balance and range of motion. Restorative breathing exercises and a final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity.

ZUMBA: ZUMBA is a fusion of Latin and International music - dance themes that create a dynamic, exciting, effective fitness system! The routines feature aerobic/fitness interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body.
